28.9 Conclusion

This chapter has highlighted the important issue of selecting the appropriate guiding catheter as tailored to the individual case. Design features of guiding catheters vary from diagnostic catheters in view of the increased functionality required, in particular, the need for good stable support throughout the case. Choosing the optimum shape, size and type of guiding catheters will be influenced by route of access, aortic anatomy, target vessel characteristics and range of interventional devices to be used. Selection and execution of an appropriate guiding catheter strategy remains to this day a critical determinant of any successful intervention, further minimizing the risk of procedural complications to the patient while delivering time and cost savings.
